A big thank you to Mr. Jozsa, Ms. Spotswood, Mr. Roth, Ms. Wyman, and Ms. Storoshenko, along with our amazing parent volunteers, for making our Terry Fox Run a tremendous success on Monday! We enjoyed a beautiful day for the event, and the Ron Southern community raised over $1,000—the highest amount since the school opened. Fantastic job, everyone!
September 30 marks the National Day for Truth and Reconciliation, which is intended to respond to the Truth and Reconciliation Commission’s Call to Action No. 80.
Throughout the school year, our schools have weaved and enhanced learning through Indigenous ways of being, belonging, doing, and knowing into the Alberta curriculum. This is achieved through Indigenous pedagogical practices such as land-based learning, exploring texts by Indigenous authors, delving into language and history and through Indigenous residencies.
This week at Ron Southern, all students are reading the book “When We Were Alone” by David Robertson, and exploring the questions:
- How do we take care of the hearts, minds, bodies and spirits in our classroom community?
- What can we do contribute to a safe and caring classroom community?
- How does this contribute to a safe and caring school community?
- What action can we take to advance reconciliation?
Our students are very proud of this work, and we are pretty sure they would love to share their learning and commitments with you. Also, we encourage all our students to wear something orange tomorrow, Thursday, September 26, as we participate in Orange Shirt Day in recognition of The National Day for Truth and Reconciliation.
Just a friendly reminder that tomorrow is Meet the Teacher! No appointments are necessary, so feel free to drop by and attend one of the scheduled sessions. We’re excited for everyone to come out, learn about what’s happening in each classroom, and enjoy the delicious food provided by the council. Looking forward to seeing you there!
