General Health Measures
In all matters of health, CBE takes direction from Alberta Education and Alberta Health Services. Find out how you can reduce the spread and lessen the impact of illness in school communities.
Routine Immunizations
The CBE supports the AHS school-based immunization program.
If your child is unable to attend school due to illness, please email: ronsouthern@cbe.ab.ca.
It is important that you call the school if your child is absent or arriving late. Please report all absences to the Attendance Line. Learn more on our Attendance page.
Illness
If your child is ill, please keep them at home until they are well enough to participate in all school activities. If your child becomes ill during the school day, we will contact you and you will be expected to arrange for your child to be picked up as soon as possible.
Allergies
Schools continue to revisit policies that help protect anaphylactic children. Allergic shock can be sudden and even deadly for those affected. Often schools attempt to eliminate allergens from the environment; however this can create a false sense of security, as it is almost impossible to guarantee an allergen-free school.
We will work together with families to create a safe environment. We recognize the need to balance the right and convenience of all students to eat what they like and the allergic child’s right to be safe at school. To help reduce the risk to our anaphylactic children, we ask you to bring lunches and snacks that are free from nuts. If you are planning to send treats that have been prepared in a commercial kitchen into your child’s classroom, you need to communicate clearly with your child’s teacher beforehand.
If classroom treats are mistakenly sent into school, teachers will contact families and remind them that we are unable to distribute items unless a conversation has occurred beforehand. In this case, items can be picked up from the school office or returned home.
Injury
The safety of all children is extremely important to us! Safety rules and consistent expectations help us to ensure the well-being of students, staff and visitors. All of our staff members have First Aid training. Minor injuries will be dealt with at school and parents will be informed of any incident either by a phone call or a note in your child’s agenda. If a more serious injury occurs, parents will be contacted immediately and appropriate actions will be implemented.
Health Concerns
Please inform the school in writing of any special health concerns regarding your child/children. This is most important in case of allergies and when students are unable to participate in physical activities. Where prescription medication is to be administered by school staff, this CBE form must be completed. Forms are also available at the school office.
Medical information is completed at the beginning of each school year. If your child’s medical condition changes during the year, please update their information at the office and with your child’s teacher. If your child has an Epi-pen or an asthma puffer, we need to be informed.
Lice
There may be times during the school year when we have cases of head lice.
If your child has head lice, please contact the school and let us know. If your child has been exposed to lice at school we will notify you.
As a precaution, we ask all parents to check their child’s head frequently for a few weeks after any exposure. You can find more information on lice from myhealth.alberta.ca.
