This year, we have established a student advisory council made up of students from grades three to six. Each month we randomly choose a student from each class, to learn about their experience at Ron Southern school. At these meetings we cover topics ranging from learning to how they feel welcomed at our school. These have been rich conversations, and we have been amazed and impressed with their insightful perspectives.
So, what did our young learners share? They love our teachers, the innovative lesson designs, the array of clubs we offer, and the enriching field trips. Not to be overlooked is their appreciation for our playground, with some even noting the joy derived from their teachers cheering for the same sports team they love.
Digging deeper into their favorite lessons, a recurring theme emerged: tasks that are designed to be hands-on, interdisciplinary and make real world connections leave a lasting impression.
Regarding suggestions for enhancing Ron Southern, our students voiced several desires:
- An increased presence of technology (which we're pleased to announce has been addressed with a recent substantial tech acquisition, significantly improving the device-to-student ratio).
- A more robust recycling program and a greater emphasis on environmental consciousness.
- Greater visibility and celebration of our cultural diversity within the school community.
Capturing these diverse voices is important in ensuring every student feels embraced within our school. We value their viewpoint and are committed to addressing the feedback from our council to make Ron Southern an exemplary learning environment for all our students.
