World Down Syndrome Day is marked each year on March 21, beginning in 2007. The 21st day of March was selected to signify the uniqueness of the triplication of the 21st chromosome which causes Down syndrome. This year the theme for World Down Syndrome Day is “End the Stereotypes.” In the case of Down Syndrome, stereotypes can lead to them being treated as children, underestimated, and excluded. At Ron Southern, we work with our students to support them in understanding the diversity in our building, as well as how differences enrich our community and inform our school’s identity.

On Thursday, we invite students to wear mismatched or their most fun and colourful socks. The idea is to start a conversation, so when students are asked about their socks, they can share what they know about Down syndrome and what they value about diversity.

We would also like to wish our families that celebrate Easter and Good Friday a Happy Easter. And a Happy Holi to our families that celebrate Holi.

Finally, we would like to wish all our students and families a wonderful and enjoyable spring break.
